What are Metered Dose Inhalers and their Types?

Inhalers or Metered dose inhalers are used for directly delivering the medication to the respiratory organ (lungs) via inhalation/nasal cavity. It is easy to use and consists of an aerosol canister. In the current market, there are different types of MDI available having different applications. Did you know? The first Metered Dose inhaler was developed by Riker Laboratories in 1955. However, there are three main components of an inhaler -

  1. The canister is made from aluminum/stainless steel
  2. The metering valve
  3. An actuator or mouthpiece

But sometimes inhalers came with an additional device known as holding chambers or spacers used for reducing the speed of aerosol leaving the canister. Now, let’s take a look into the different categories of metered dose inhalers-

  1. Spacer with Metered dose inhaler -This type of MDI comes with a corticosteroid drug that acts by repressing the overacting immune system for reducing inflammation in the lungs. It comes with a spacer that is put in front of the mouthpiece and has the sole purpose of reducing aerosol speed. Its main function is to relax the lung muscle and provide relief from coughing, asthma, and COPD.
  2. Bronchodilators - Drugs such as salmeterol and formoterol come under the category of bronchodilators. The main function of this inhaler is to relax the muscles of the lungs and airways. However, there are two kinds of bronchodilators - short-acting bronchodilators and long-acting bronchodilators. Also, these inhalers are used for treating bronchospasm and are commonly referred to as “rescue inhalers”.
  3. Combination Inhalers - This combination of metered dose inhalers consists of a long-acting bronchodilator and a corticosteroid. It helps in overcoming the side effect of long-acting bronchodilators such as the risk of a heart attack. However, it should not be withdrawn without prior discussion with the doctor.

Working Principle Of Metered Dose Inhalers

As we discussed above regarding the parts of an inhaler. The aluminum/stainless steel contains the medication in liquid form. The technique used here is the Proper technique. A pressurized canister help in delivering the medication to the nasal cavity via inhaling aerosol solution/droplets. When a patient pushes the canister, it pushes a button on the other end. So, via metered valve and mouthpiece, the medication reached the nasal cavity. Here, the pressure and medication present in the canister are important for quick relief from coughing, shortness of breath, etc. At last,  the motive for inhaling via the nasal cavity is because the cavity is rich in blood vessels and increases the absorption rate which is quite important for medical conditions like asthma, COPD, bronchospasm, allergies, etc.
